Searching For Alarms

The Sun Management Center server maintains a database of alarms for all hosts within the server context. The Alarm Search View and the Host Alarm Summary can be used to query this database and display the results.

The Alarm Search View

The Alarm Search View can be obtained by clicking on the Alarms Button on the Navigation Bar.

A typical Alarm Search View is shown below:

Figure 16 - An Alarm Search View

Specify the search criteria, then click on the Search Button to perform the search. The search criteria are described in the table below:

Criterion Description
Hosts Enter the names of one or more hosts, separated by spaces. Alarms from any of the specified hosts will be displayed. If you wish to view alarms on any host, leave this field blank. Do not enter IP addresses.
Ports By default, agents use SNMP port 161. If one or more agents are using a non-default port, you can enter additional ports in this field, separated by spaces. (If you wish to view alarms from agents on any port, leave this field blank.)
Domains To only show alarms for agents within a specific domain, select a domain from the picklist. To show all alarms, select "(ALL)".
Severity There are five checkboxes corresponding to the five alarm severities. One or more of these checkboxes may be selected. Alarms matching the selected severities will be displayed.
Include Acknowledged and Closed alarms can be displayed by selecting the corresponding checkboxes. If both checkboxes are unselected, only current, unacknowledged alarms will be shown.
From, To You can limit your search to a particular time period using the Time Range Editor. Launch the editor by clicking on the Edit icon (see Figure 17). The editor will fill in the From and To fields with the times you select. Note that you cannot edit the From and To fields directly, you must use the editor. To clear the time range, click the Delete button.
Table 2 - Alarm Search Criteria

IMPORTANT: Domain alarm searches will NOT include alarms that ONLY appear in Managed Objects (such as Module Objects) in the domain. For an alarm to be included, the domain must contain a Host Object for that Managed Object.

fIGURe 17 - Launching The Time Range Editor

After the search is performed, a table is displayed listing the alarms matching the specified criteria. This table contains the alarm icon (indicating severity and state), the host and port where the alarm occurred, the status message, the start time, and the end time (for closed alarms only). The number of alarms found is displayed at the top right of the table.

To drill down directly to the source of an alarm, select the alarm icon or the link in the Status column.

If there are any alarms in the table that can be acknowledged, there will be three links labeled select all, select none, and acknowledge above the table. To acknowledge one or more alarms, select the checkboxes in the first column of the table corresponding to the alarms you wish to acknowledge and click on acknowledge. To select all checkboxes, click on select all. To unselect all checkboxes, click on select none.

TIP: The alarms in the table can be sorted based on any column by clicking on the column headers.

Host Alarm Summary

The Host Alarm Summary View can be obtained by clicking on the Alarms button in the Host Bar. The Host Alarm Summary View contains a table listing the alarms on the currently viewed host.

By default, alarms of severity Down, Critical and Alert are displayed, acknowledged alarms are displayed, and closed alarms are not displayed. These search criteria can be modified and a new search can be performed by selecting the Search Button.

A typical Host Alarm Summary View is shown below:

Figure 18 - A Host Alarm Summary View

The Host Alarm Summary View is similar to the Alarm Search View, except that the host and port search criteria do not need to be specified, and do not appear in the table.

Time Range Editor

The Time Range Editor (Figure 19), lets you specify a time period. You can specify the start and end times directly, by checking off the Start and End boxes, and selecting the times using the time and calendar controls under the checkboxes. Alternatively, you can specify one end point, such as the start time, and optionally the duration of the time period by checking off the duration box and selecting the length of the time period from the list below. If no duration is specified, the time range will be all points after the start time (if start was selected), or all points before the end time (if end was selected).

To change the time in the time control, select either the hours, minutes or seconds box, and then 1) enter the new value, or 2) use the Up and Down arrows at the right to increment/decrement the selected value. Use the down or up arrow to switch from AM to PM if needed. To change the month or year, click on the single (month) or double (year) arrows to the left (decrement) or right (increment) of the month control. To pick a day of the month, simply click on that day in the calendar. The new day should then be highlighted.

In all cases, the start and/or end time(s) will be calculated and displayed in the From and To fields at the bottom of the window. Once you have selected the desired time range, exit the editor by clicking Apply. To exit without changing the time range, click Cancel.
