Version 5.1.1
For use with Sun Management Center
README.install
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nomenclature
============
- 'Sun Management Center' was formerly called 'Sun Enterprise SyMON'.
This product only supports Sun Management Center 2.1 or higher.
- Halcyon has developed 'PrimeAlert Agents' for a number of platforms
(Windows NT 4 and 2000, HP-UX, and Linux) that allow non-Solaris
hosts to be monitored by Sun Management Center.
Supported Platforms
===================
The following table summarizes the platform support for the various
components contained within this distribution:
Operating Base Agent Server Console
System Product Layer Layer Layer
----------------- ----------------- ----- ------ -------
Solaris 2.6-2.8 SunMC 2.1.x/3.0 x x
HP-UX 10.20-11.00 PrimeAlert Agent x
for HP-UX
Windows NT 4/2000 SunMC 2.1.x/3.0 x
Installation Instructions
=========================
Definitions
-----------
Server Host: A host where the Sun Management Center server is
installed and running. This host must be a Solaris
host, and it contains the package SUNWessrv.
Agent Host: The host where the PrimeAlert Agent for HP-UX is
installed and running.
Console Host: A host where the Sun Management Center console is
installed and running. If this host is a Solaris
host, it contains the package SUNWescon; it may
also be a host running Windows.
Requirements
------------
This agent has been tested on HP-UX 10.20 and HP-UX 11.00. There is no
guarantee that it will work on other versions of the operating system.
In addition to the PrimeAlert Agent for HP-UX, a Sun Management Center
2.1 or later server layer and a Sun Management Center 2.1 or later
console layer (Solaris or Windows) are needed.
Extracting the Distribution File
--------------------------------
The PrimeAlert Agent for HP-UX distribution file,
HALHPAgent_5.1.1.tar.(Z|gz), must be extracted on a UNIX host before
any packages can be installed. For example, assume that the
distribution file has been copied to the /tmp/install directory, and
will be extracted there. In this case, the procedure for extracting the
distribution file is:
% su -
# cd /tmp/install
# uncompress HALHPAgent_5.1.1.tar.Z
or gzip -d HALHPAgent_5.1.1.tar.gz
# tar xvf HALHPAgent_5.1.1.tar
In this case, the directory /tmp/install/HALHPAgent_5.1.1 represents
the installation source directory, <SOURCE_DIR>, which is referenced
below.
Server Layer Packages - Solaris Only
------------------------------------
The procedure described in this sub-section should be performed on the
Sun Management Center server layer host only.
Note that server layer packages should be installed/upgraded before
agent or console layer packages are installed/upgraded.
Login to the Sun Management Center server host as root. Extract the
PrimeAlert Agent for HP-UX distribution file (see the above section
'Extracting the Distribution File') in a temporary location, and then
run the script HALHPAgent-install.sh, e.g.:
% su -
# cd <SOURCE_DIR>
# ./HALHPAgent-install.sh -s
The following packages are installed or upgraded by the installation
script:
- HALsishpa
- HALmmsast
- HALmmshsa
- HALmmsmib
Console Layer Packages - Solaris
--------------------------------
The procedure described in this sub-section should be performed on any
console host that is being upgraded to the latest version of PrimeAlert
Agent for HP-UX, or that is receiving HP-UX Agent files for the first
time.
Login to a Sun Management Center console host as root. Extract the
PrimeAlert Agent for HP-UX distribution file (see the above section
'Extracting the Distribution File') in a temporary location, and then
run the script HALHPAgent-install.sh, e.g.:
% su -
# cd <SOURCE_DIR>
# ./HALHPAgent-install.sh -c
The following packages are installed or upgraded by the installation
script:
- HALmmcast
- HALmmchsa
- HALmmcmib
The local SunMC console should be restarted after installation.
Console Layer Packages - Windows
--------------------------------
The procedure described in this sub-section should be performed on any
Windows console host that is being upgraded to the latest version of
PrimeAlert Agent for HP-UX, or that is receiving HP-UX Agent files for
the first time.
1 - Extract the PrimeAlert Agent for HP-UX distribution file (see the
above section 'Extracting the Distribution File') on a Solaris
host. In this case, the InstallShield installer for Windows has the
pathname:
<SOURCE_DIR>/packages/win32/HALHPAgent_5.1.1.exe
2 - Copy the Windows InstallShield installer to a convenient location
(<path>) on the Windows console host.
3 - If present, remove the currently installed console package for the
PrimeAlert Agent for HP-UX (see the following section 'Removing
Console Layer Packages - Windows').
4 - Run the InstallShield package HALHPAgent_5.1.1.exe, for example:
Start->Run... <path>\HALHPAgent_5.1.1.exe
Follow the instructions presented on screen.
Besides installing a number of program files, the installation
program puts a number of shortcuts in the Start Menu's Programs
folder, sub-folder Halcyon. These shortcuts provide easy and fast
access to help files for the three modules included with the
PrimeAlert Agent for HP-UX.
The local SunMC console should be restarted after installation.
Agent Layer Packages - HP-UX Only
---------------------------------
The procedure described in this sub-section should be performed on any
HP-UX host that is being upgraded to the latest version of the
PrimeAlert Agent for HP-UX, or that is receiving the PrimeAlert Agent
for HP-UX for the first time.
UPGRADE NOTE - If the agent layer of the PrimeAlert Agent for HP-UX
is being upgraded from version 5.0.x to 5.1.1, then the following
procedure should be followed on the agent installation host:
1. Stop the 'Halcyon PrimeAlert Agent' process.
2. Install version 5.1.1 of the PrimeAlert Agent for HP-UX, as
outlined below.
3. If the agent layers of PrimeAlert for Cisco Router, PrimeAlert
PlusPack, or PrimeAlert ScriptRunner are installed on the agent
host, then upgrade these modules to the most recent version.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
Login to an HP-UX host as root. Extract the PrimeAlert Agent for HP-UX
distribution file (see the above section 'Extracting the Distribution
File') in a temporary location, and then run the script
HALHPAgent-install.sh, e.g.:
% su -
# cd <SOURCE_DIR>
# ./HALHPAgent-install.sh -a
NOTE:
On HP-UX systems it may be necessary to run the install script from
a local file system since the HP installation software requires root
access to the directories containing the packages.
The following packages are installed or upgraded by the installation
script:
- HALpiahpa
- HALpmahsa
- HALpmaast
- HALpmamib
If you are doing an initial install, you are requested to enter the
following parameters:
- PrimeAlert Agent Port: This is the port used by the server to
communicate with the PrimeAlert Agent. The default value is 161.
Press <ENTER> if you want to keep the default, or specify a
different port.
Note: Typically, the installation program for the HP-UX operating
system will install an HP MIB-II agent that uses the default
port. Please verify that you are not running the agent
provided by HP, or specify a different port.
- SunMC Trap Server: This is the name of the host that runs the SunMC
Trap Server component. This can only be a Solaris host. Therefore,
no default value is provided. Typically, the trap server runs on
the server layer host.
- SunMC Trap Port: This is the port used by the PrimeAlert Agent for
HP-UX to communicate with the SunMC Trap Server. The default value
is 162. Press <ENTER> if you want to keep the default, or specify a
different port.
- SunMC Event Server: This is the name of the host that runs the
SunMC Event Server component. This can only be a Solaris host. The
default value is the hostname you provided for the SunMC Trap
Server, since the server components usually reside on the same
host. Press <ENTER> if you want to keep the default, or specify a
different hostname.
- SunMC Event Port: This is the port used by the PrimeAlert Agent for
HP-UX to communicate with the SunMC Event Server. The default value
is 163. Press <ENTER> if you want to keep the default, or specify a
different port.
- Seed: This is the seed you used when you installed the SunMC server
components. In order for the PrimeAlert Agent for HP-UX to function
correctly, you have to specify the same seed. The default value is
"maplesyrup". Press <ENTER> if you want to keep the default, or
specify a different seed.
After the previous information has been provided, the install script
modifies the file /var/opt/PrimeAlert/cfg/domain-config.x. This file
is used as the main configuration file for your PrimeAlert Agent.
The install script also seeds the PrimeAlert Agent for HP-UX with the
seed you provided above.
Finally, the install script displays some information on additional
shell scripts that you can use in order to start, stop, and inquire
about the status of the PrimeAlert Agent for HP-UX.
At this stage, the installation of the PrimeAlert Agent component is
complete. No host reboot is required. If you have upgraded the agent
or any of its bundled modules, the agent must be restarted. For an
initial install, the agent must simply be started. Use the pa script
to control the agent:
- pa start agent: Starts the PrimeAlert Agent.
- pa stop agent: Stops the PrimeAlert Agent.
- pa restart agent: Restarts the PrimeAlert Agent (stop and start).
- pa status agent: Prints the status of the PrimeAlert Agent
(is the agent running or not).
The control script can be found in /opt/PrimeAlert/bin.
Installation Problems
---------------------
If the console and/or server cannot communicate with the agent, verify
that the agent has been seeded. This can be done by checking for the
existence of the file /var/opt/PrimeAlert/cfg/agent-engine-d.dat on the
HP-UX agent host. To perform a manual seeding on the HP-UX agent host,
run the following as root in a Unix shell:
# /opt/PrimeAlert/bin/pa usm-seed -s <seed> agent
where <seed> is the seed value that was used during the installation of
the Sun Management Center server layer. After the PrimeAlert Agent for
HP-UX has been re-seeded, it must be restarted. Note that no other
processes need to be restarted on any other hosts.
