======================================================================
The Neuron Management Server is the framework that is central to all
Halcyon Neuron products. The Neuron Management Server provides the
ability to execute scripts when events are received (see documentation
included in the distribution directory for more details).
Also included as part of the Neuron Management Server is Neuron Event
Viewer. The Event Viewer displays received events matching any of the
specified filtering criteria and allows users to access any Neuron
Agents in their environment directly via the Neuron Management Server
(see NeuronEventManager_[VERSION]_UsersGuide.pdf for more details).
Halcyon Neuron Event Manager
======================================================================
The Neuron Event Manager is a web-based interface for creating and
managing Rules. Rules consist of user defined event filters,
automated actions and schedules and are meant to allow specific
actions to be taken when specific events are received by the Neuron
Management Server.
Please see NeuronEventManager_[VERSION]_UsersGuide.pdf for more
details.
Halcyon Neuron Integration for Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center
======================================================================
The Neuron Integration for Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center
provides the ability for the Neuron Management Server to receive
events from and transmit notifications to Oracle Enterprise Manager
Ops Center.
Notifications that occur within Ops Center can be received by the
Neuron Management Server and transformed into Neuron Management Server
events which can then be sent out to a variety of other Enterprise
Management Frameworks using the integration products noted below.
Please see the README.config user guide within the distribution
directory for details on how to configure this integration.
Halcyon Neuron Integration for IBM Tivoli
======================================================================
The Neuron Integration for IBM Tivoli can be utilized to transmit
Neuron Management Server events to IBM Tivoli using Tivoli's postemsg.
Coupled with the Neuron Integration for Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops
Center, this provides the ideal way to have your Ops Center
notifications appear within IBM Tivoli.
Please see the README.config user guide within the distribution
directory for details on how to configure this integration.
Halcyon Neuron Integration for IBM Tivoli Netcool
======================================================================
The Neuron Integration for IBM Tivoli Netcool can be utilized to
transmit Neuron Management Server events to IBM Tivoli Netcool via
SNMP. Coupled with the Neuron Integration for Oracle Enterprise
Manager Ops Center, this provides the ideal way to have your Ops
Center notifications appear within IBM Tivoli Netcool.
Please see the README.config user guide within the distribution
directory for details on how to configure this integration.
Halcyon Neuron Integration for HP OpenView
======================================================================
The Neuron Integration for HP OpenView can be utilized to transmit
Neuron Management Server events to HP OpenView via SNMP. Coupled with
the Neuron Integration for Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center, this
provides the ideal way to have your Ops Center notifications appear
within HP OpenView.
Please see the README.config user guide within the distribution
directory for details on how to configure this integration.
Halcyon Neuron Integration for BMC Event Manager
======================================================================
The Neuron Integration for BMC Event Manager can be utilized to
transmit Neuron Management Server events to BMC Event Manager via SNMP.
Coupled with the Neuron Integration for Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops
Center, this provides the ideal way to have your Ops Center
notifications appear within BMC EventManager.
Please see the README.config user guide within the distribution
directory for details on how to configure this integration.
Halcyon Neuron Integration for Sun Management Center
======================================================================
The Neuron Integration for Sun Management Center provides the ability
for the Neuron Management Server to retrieve alarms from your existing
Sun Management Center installations.
Once translated into Neuron Management Server events, the Neuron
Management Server can then utilize the Neuron Integration for Oracle
Enterprise Manager Ops Center to send all those Sun Management Center
alarms into Ops Center.
Please see the README.config user guide within the distribution
directory for details on how to configure this integration.
Installation and Uninstallation Instructions
======================================================================
The Neuron Management Suite contains all required products for the
Neuron Network Monitor solution.
1) Install and start the Neuron Management Suite. Instructions can be
found in the Installation and Configuration Guide.
2) Log into the Neuron Management Portal, the web-based user-interface
of the Neuron Management Suite. At the end of the installation,
you should see a link to use to access the Neuron Management Portal.
This link will look like this:
https://[host]:[port]/portal
- host: The host which the Neuron Management Suite was installed on.
- port: The port was dynamically assigned during installation.
3) Configure and enable any of the integration products outlined above
if integration with other Enterprise Management Frameworks (EMFs)
is required. Please refer to README.config.
4) Configure SNMP monitoring if desired (see the "Configure SNMP
Monitoring" section below).
NOTE: It is advisable to review all other READMEs included with the
products being installed. They contain important information
on what the product does and how to configure it.
The README.config file in particular contains important
information regarding configuration of the solution.
Configure SNMP Monitoring
======================================================================
The Neuron Management Server is capable of receiving SNMP traps from
any system or device that is capable of sending them. By default, the
Neuron Management Server does not process any SNMP traps it receives.
In order to configure which SNMP traps should be processed log into
the Neuron Management Portal and select the Event Manager. There you
can configure rules that will allow processing of SNMP traps. When
setting up a rule select the rule type "Inbound" and the stream
"SNMP". See NeuronEventManager_[VERSION]_UsersGuide.pdf for more
details on how to set up rules.
Once inbound rules for the SNMP stream have been set up, any matching
SNMP trap will be converted into a Neuron Management Server event.
How this transformation from an SNMP trap into a Neuron Management
Server event is performed can be specified in the inbound SNMP rules
you configure.
Inbound SNMP Rules
--------------------------------------------------------------------
In the Transformation tab of the rule editor it is possible to define
how certain fields of the resulting events are populated from the
SNMP trap. Most of these fields accept the following special
values:
%OID, e.g. %1.3.6.1.4.1.1242.1.1.3.11
%variableName, e.g. %eventMessage
In order for Neuron Management Server to translate the %variableName
into the corresponding %OID it requires information about the trap.
A MIB file that contains the trap definition is needed. Once the MIB
file has been loaded any occurrence of %variableName will be
replaced with %OID (the corresponding OID). In a second step the
%OID will be replaced with the value found in the incoming SNMP
trap.
MIBs
--------------------------------------------------------------------
In order to translate %variableName into %OID, the Neuron Management
Server needs to be made aware of those variables via one or more MIB
files. This is done by placing the MIB(s) in the [LOCALDIR]/mibs
directory (where LOCALDIR is typically /var/opt/HMF), which is
polled every few minutes for new MIBs. When new MIBs are picked up,
they will be parsed and added to Neuron Management Server's MIB
database.
IMPORTANT: By default the MIB directory is checked and/or parsed
every 30 minutes. This can be changed by editing the
mibDirectory.poll configuration property of the
MibService using the Configuration section of the
Neuron Management Portal. If editing this value,
please restart Neuron Management Server.
NOTE: The MIB files in [LOCALDIR]/mibs must be readable by user
"halcyon". Make sure that the MIB files are either owned
by this user or make the files readable to world.
NOTE: Depending on the size of the MIB file(s) being parsed and/or
the parsing time interval noted above, it may take a bit of
time before traps specified in the MIB(s) can be processed
by the Neuron Management Server. You can also refer to the
NeuronServer.log file in [LOCALDIR]/logs where lines will be
logged indicating when parsing starts and is finished.
